They change often, so please confirm details in the store before subscribing.

There is no single “best” Bible app, only the one that best fits how you want to spend time with God. Some people want every translation and thousands of reading plans. Others want guided audio prayer, a narrated Bible for the commute, or a quiet verse matched to how they feel. This guide compares five popular options so you can choose with clear eyes.

YouVersion Bible App

Best for: anyone who wants a comprehensive, free Bible library with an enormous choice of reading plans.

The YouVersion Bible App, published by Life.Church, is the broadest option here. Its App Store listing describes more than 3,500 Bible versions in more than 2,300 languages, and thousands of reading plans, from short devotionals to whole-Bible plans. It also offers audio Bibles for select versions, a daily verse with shareable verse images, highlights, bookmarks, private or public notes, prayer lists, and video content from partners. A free account syncs your notes and plans across devices, and some versions can be used offline.

  • Strengths: unmatched translation and language choice; a huge plan library; free, with no in-app purchases listed; available on many devices.
  • Limitations: the sheer amount of content can feel overwhelming if you just want a short, focused moment each day; audio is available only for select versions.
  • Platforms: iPhone, iPad, Apple Vision and Apple TV on Apple devices; also available on Android.

Hallow

Best for: Catholics, and others drawn to guided, audio-led prayer.

Hallow is built around audio-guided prayer, and its listing describes more than 10,000 sessions. Content includes the Rosary, Catholic Bible readings, Lectio Divina on the daily readings, the Divine Mercy Chaplet, the Ignatian Examen, novenas, chant, sleep Bible stories and homilies, plus seasonal challenges for Lent and Advent. Many sessions offer different lengths, and you can journal after praying, download sessions for offline use and share intentions with a family group.

  • Strengths: deep Catholic prayer content; high production quality; flexible session lengths; daily prayers, including the Rosary, available on the free tier according to the listing.
  • Limitations: most of the library requires a subscription, which is the priciest monthly plan in this comparison; the strongly Catholic focus may not suit every reader.
  • Price: listed at $9.99 per month or $69.99 per year.
  • Platforms: iPhone and iPad, plus Macs with Apple silicon; also available on Android.

Abide

Best for: people who want Scripture-based meditation, and help winding down at night.

Abide, from Guideposts, focuses on Christian meditation and sleep. Its listing describes more than 2,000 meditations, 365+ bedtime stories, kids’ stories, more than 50 audio guides to books of the Bible, and audio of every chapter of the NIV. You can save favorites and journal in daily entries, and subscribers get short daily devotionals.

  • Strengths: a large library for meditation and sleep; a calming, audio-first experience; family-friendly stories.
  • Limitations: it is centered on meditation and sleep rather than reading the Bible yourself; the listing shows many different Premium prices without explaining each one, so check what you’re choosing before you subscribe.
  • Price: free to download, with a free trial of Premium; listed in-app purchases range from $4.99 to $44.99.
  • Platforms: iPhone, iPad, Macs with Apple silicon and Apple Vision; also available on Android.

Dwell

Best for: listening to Scripture, on commutes, walks or while you work.

Dwell is an audio Bible. Its listing describes 14 translations, among them the ESV, NIV, NLT, KJV, CSB, NKJV, NASB and The Message, with more than 20 narrator voices to choose from. Read Along scrolls the text in sync with the audio. There are 75+ listening plans, curated playlists, offline downloads, a sleep mode, a Repeat & Reflect feature for memorization, plus devotionals, prayers and kids’ content.

  • Strengths: the best listening experience in this list; widely used modern translations; human narration with a choice of voices.
  • Limitations: the main experience requires a subscription after the trial; it is designed around listening more than reflection prompts or personalized devotionals.
  • Price: 7-day free trial; Solo plans listed at $9.99 per month or $59.99 per year, with Duo and Family options.
  • Platforms: iPhone, iPad, Macs with Apple silicon and Apple Vision; also available on Android.

Bible For You

Best for: people who want a short daily moment with Scripture that starts from how they feel.

Bible For You is our app. Instead of starting with a book and chapter, you start with a feeling, such as anxious, lonely, grieving or grateful, and receive a Bible verse with a short reflection, a question for meditation and a prayer. Around that, it offers a verse of the day and short devotional (always free), a Bible reader, reading plans, text-to-speech audio, a spiritual journal with favorites and history, Home Screen and Lock Screen widgets with a new verse every hour, and an optional Catholic section with the Rosary, novenas and the liturgical calendar.

  • Strengths: a fast, personal way to find a relevant verse; a reflection and prayer with every verse; the verse of the day, Bible reader, reading plans, Rosary and novenas need no subscription; widgets keep Scripture visible through the day.
  • Limitations: iPhone-focused, with no Android version; the Bible reader offers public-domain translations such as the WEB, KJV, ASV and Douay-Rheims, not the NIV, ESV or NLT, and English text needs an internet connection; audio is text-to-speech rather than human narration; only four reading plans; free users get three feeling-based verses and three listens per day, and see banner ads in some screens.
  • Price: free to download; Premium is listed at $1.99 per week, $4.99 per month or $19.99 per year, with a free trial and a reminder before any charge.
  • Platforms: iPhone (iOS 17.6 or later); the App Store also lists Macs with Apple silicon and Apple Vision.

How to choose

  • You want the most translations and plans, for free: start with YouVersion.
  • You’re Catholic and want guided prayer: Hallow is built for that. Bible For You also includes the Rosary and novenas, in text form, without a subscription.
  • You mostly listen: Dwell’s narrated audio Bible is the strongest choice here.
  • You want help to quiet your mind or sleep: Abide focuses on meditation and bedtime content.
  • You want a short, personal moment that starts with how you feel: Bible For You is designed for that.

Many people use more than one: a full Bible app for longer reading, and a smaller app for a daily moment or for listening. And you don’t need an app at all to build a meaningful habit. A printed Bible and a notebook are still excellent tools. Our guide on how to start a daily Bible-reading habit works with any of them.

How we compared

We compared apps on what matters most for daily devotion and reflection: Bible reading and translations, devotional content, personalization, audio, journaling, reading plans, pricing and platforms. Information about other apps comes from their US App Store listings, checked on October 12, 2026; Android availability comes from each publisher’s store presence. We did not test every premium feature of every app, and we have avoided ratings, rankings and claims we couldn’t verify. Descriptions of Bible For You reflect the current app. If you spot something out of date, please let us know so we can correct it.
